About & Verification Standards
The Historic Contractors Directory is an independent, non-commission trade directory cataloging qualified historic preservation artisans and specialty restoration contractors throughout Greater Philadelphia.
Our Editorial Mission
Pre-1940 structures require specialized traditional building technologies. Modern construction methods—specifically rigid Portland-based Type M and Type S mortars, vinyl replacement inserts, and synthetic barrier coatings—frequently cause catastrophic, irreversible masonry spalling, moisture entrapment, and structural decay. Our mission is to connect historic building owners with contractors who adhere to the National Park Service (NPS) Preservation Briefs and Secretary of the Interior Standards.
Listing Verification Criteria
Every contractor featured in this directory undergoes independent verification against empirical trade criteria:
- Regulatory Registration: Active registration with the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General under the Home Improvement Consumer Protection Act (HICPA).
- Authentic Craft Capabilities: Demonstrated expertise in breathable lime mortar repointing (ASTM C270 Type O/K and NHL), historic wood sash rehabilitation, or traditional slate and copper roofing.
- Non-Bulk Sourcing: Profiles are researched individually from public records, verified portfolios, and municipal preservation permits, rather than scraped aggregations.
- Direct Consumer Relationship: We do not charge referral fees, take commissions, or act as an intermediary. Homeowners and facility managers contact craftsmen directly.
